As India is facing a pandemic, there are various new issues and problems coming up. Many companies are working in this direction amid COVID-19. To help the hospitals dealing with pregnant women during the labour phase, Janitri Innovations came up with a solution to deal with. This solution is an intrapartum remote monitoring system that will help in monitoring the labour of pregnant women with less physical contact.

After COVID-19 is declared a pandemic, India is projected to record the highest number of births in the 9 months after the declaration of the pandemic in March. According to a top UN body, between March to December more than 20 million babies are expected to be born in the country. Healthcare professionals including Obstetrician–gynaecologists should be vigilant in screening for exposure as well as symptoms of COVID-19 for pregnant patients. To combat this, India needs a more robust health monitoring system which should have less contact between patients and doctors to lessen the spread of coronavirus. It can be done via phone or telehealth before a visit to allow facilities to prepare and optimize care coordination needs.

There can be a risk of infection to expectant mothers and new-born babies as they are most vulnerable during the COVID-19 pandemic. During the labour phase, pregnant women who visit hospitals are exposed to the risk of COVID-19. Doctors visit them frequently which increases contact and SBAs(Skilled Birth Attendants) are assigned to labour rooms also in constant contact. In this unfortunate situation of Corona spread, the work burden has increased and management of patients is required to provide everyone with the services. One of the ways to decrease the spread and at the same time provide care to the mother and babies in the labour room is remote monitoring and digital/paperless solutions. The hospitals are facing various problems, including Medical professionals, patient safety being compromised by doctors, multiple, management of suspected patient patients load, and physical documents because of the COVID-19 situation.

An advanced intrapartum remote monitoring system can be installed at hospitals handling labour cases during COVID-19, which promises to spare healthcare workers from exposure to suspected or quarantined cases, has been developed. This system also reduces the need to use precious protective gear, which has become scarce. It will help generate the data so that authorities can manage labour remotely.

It allows entry into the register by a staff nurse and the vital signs of a pregnant woman. It gives a reminder to monitor the labour vitals, as per the standard WHO intrapartum protocol. It also generates alerts in case of complications, based on an in-built algorithm. The doctor at a remote location can also view the live labour progress and guide the staff nurse.

COVID-19 Screening Form: In this remote monitoring system, there is a COVID-19 screening form that the doctors/staff nurses have to fill out. This form consists of a few questions like the history of travel of the patients and symptoms, which will help them in the screening for COVID-19 pregnant patients. The form is for individuals as well as the household so both types of screening can be done at a place and on the basis of the symptoms entered alert will be given whether the patient is at risk of COVID or not.

Remote monitoring: In this time of health crisis, the doctors can guide the nurses without visiting them. The progress of labour can be seen by the doctor remotely. If there is any complication, the alert on the screen will help the doctor to guide the staff nurse remotely to tackle the situation which will help in less physical contact and will be safe for the pregnant woman, the baby, and the health care workers.

Patient Management: This device also allows one to check multiple patients at one time. All pregnant women will be seen on one screen. Audio and critical alerts will be given based on the complications and reminders for the measurement of vitals. Based on these alerts and reminders, will help the doctor/staff nurse to guide each other.

Digital Documents: This is a paperless system, automated partographs are generated and case sheets will be maintained digitally. This means less contact and less exposure.
